Radiofrequency Ablation – RFA

Radiofrequency Ablation is a minimally-invasive treatment for varicose veins. This treatment is extremely effective because it treats the underlying cause of varicose veins — venous insufficiency — and not just the affected veins. As such, it can eliminate the root cause of varicose veins and prevent them from ever returning.

Radiofrequency Ablation should be performed by a licensed physician. It’s usually done in at least two appointments, with the first appointment determining the type of treatment needed, and the second and subsequent appointments for treatment.

RF Ablation can be used on large veins in the leg and is performed in an office setting using local anesthesia or a mild sedative. Most patients do not find it to be exceedingly uncomfortable.

What is RF Ablation and How Does it Work?

RF Ablation uses radiofrequency energy (rather than laser energy) to heat up and shrink the collagen within the vein wall, causing the vein to collapse. It usually closes off the varicose vein in the leg.

Radiofrequency energy is directed through a thin tube, also known as a catheter, which is inserted through a small incision in the vein. During treatment, the physician uses ultrasound to locate the vein to be treated. This process is painless.

The physician will then use a local anesthetic to numb the area where the catheter will be inserted into the vein. As the physician inserts the catheter, it can be seen on the ultrasound. This ensures better accuracy and safety.

The physician will also inject tumescence — fluid with pain medication — around the veins to collapse the vein onto the catheter.

The local anesthetic solution has three purposes: collapse the vein, numb the tissue, and provide insulation for the heat generated inside the vein.

Following radiofrequency ablation, once the affected vein has been closed, the accumulated blood is naturally redirected to healthy veins. The treated vein is gradually absorbed into the surrounding tissues.

The treatment has a 98% success rate and there is no downtime. Another great aspect: if you are experiencing symptoms of venous insufficiency, this treatment might be covered by your insurance.

The ablation procedure is very short, lasting only about 15 to 30 minutes.

What to expect after Radio Frequency Ablation?

You will be able to walk after the RF ablation treatment and recovery occurs just hours after the procedure. The physician will wrap your treated leg in an ACE bandage, and you should keep the bandage on for 24 hours.

Your physician will ask you to wear compression stockings for about a week after your procedure.

There is no downtime with RF ablation. Most patients can have the procedure done on their lunch break and return to work the same day.
